Programs and Publications
The Center for Environment and Population
(CEP), with its partners, works in two Program areas. They
include:
- Emerging Issues in Environment and
Population, and;
- Building New Population-Environment
Leadership
Emerging Issues in
Environment and Population
Under this program, CEP and
its partners work with experts in the field to identify emerging trends
on the issues, both in the U.S. and globally. Focus is on human
population factors (such as rates of growth, density, movement, composition,
and resource consumption) and their environmental impact. The Program
addresses such topics as "Population and"... Biodiversity, Plant
and Animal Species Habitat, Terrestrial and Marine Ecosystems, Forests,
Fisheries, Water, Oceans, Climatic Change and Energy, Agriculture and
Food, Land-Use, Urbanization and Sprawl.
As part of the program, CEP
and partners: 1) produce outstanding, cutting-edge reports and other
materials for a wide variety of audiences, and; 2) carry out follow-up
activities on policy and public outreach. To report on the issues,
CEP conducts:
-State-by-State and National Assessments of population-environment, and;
-Experts' workshops, reports and briefings on a particular issue.
Publications include:
- U.S. National
Report on Population and the Environment
Just released, this "first
of its kind" groundbreaking report features a visually compelling,
easy-to-understand guide to national, regional, and state population
and environmental trends. It is also uniquely demonstrates America's
role in the global context. Fact sheets from
the report are also available.
- U.S. State
Reports on Population and the Environment Series
As part of this series, the
New Hampshire State Report is available in hard copy and online
on this website, with follow-up activities (see Activities).
In Spring 2006 the Michigan State Report was launched, with
partner National Wildlife Federation. Each year a new state report
is produced and series of follow-up activities held.
- Issues on Population & the Environment Series
This series covers emerging
issues in depth, or provides additional background resources.
Included in the series are: #1 Bibliography of Sources and
#2 University Courses. Both are available in hard copy or online
on this website.
-CEP
is Executive Producer of the global AAAS Atlas of Population and
Environment (see Activities), which won
the prestigious "American Library Association's Best Research Publication"
award. It is available online at http://atlas.aaas.org/.
-Human Population and
Freshwater Resources: U.S. Cases and International Perspectives,
Yale University Bulletin.
Follow-Up Activities
The Center organizes follow-up
activities to integrate its publications into policy and public outreach
from the local to global level. Included are Town Hall Meetings,
media and policy briefings, grassroots workshops, and more (see Activities).
Building New Population-Environment
Leadership
Under this program, CEP establishes
opportunities for new, young leaders on the issues through a wide range
of activities including internships, fellowships, lecture series, school
and young activists' workshops, and other means.
The Center partners with leading
universities and colleges across the U.S. to do seminars and host internships.
CEP is also launching the Population-Environment Fellowship Award.
Graduate students will be invited to apply for the Fellowships, for which
they will receive a stipend and credit towards their Masters or Doctorate
degrees. The Fellow(s) will produce papers and participate in activities centered
on the U.S.'s role within the global context relating to population's
environmental impacts.
If you would like to participate
in a CEP new leadership project, please contact
CEP directly.
