Science, Policy, and Advocacy on Population and the Environment

Programs

The Center for Environment and Population (CEP) works in three program areas: population and environment linkages; women/girls empowerment, and; reproductive health in the US and/or globally. CEP's focus as relates to its overall mission is on women/girls empowerment and education, sustainable development, gender and climate change, reproductive health and rights, youth, and development issues.

Population and Environment Program

Project activities under this program include:

  • Emerging Issues in Population and Sustainable Development, and;
  • Building New Young Population-Sustainable Development Leadership

Emerging Issues in Population and Sustainable Development -

Under this project, CEP collaborates with leading experts to do two things: First, to identify emerging trends on human population factors (including rates of growth, density, movement, composition, and per-capita resource consumption) and their environmental impacts.  The program addresses topics such as "Population and...Climate Change, Water, Forests, Biodiversity, Land Use, Marine/Aquatic Ecosystems, Urbanization and Sprawl".

Second, CEP addresses core issues including women-centered approaches to sustainable development and health, girls/women's empowerment and education, gender and climate change, reproductive health, and youth. As part of the program, CEP:

  1. produces cutting-edge background resource materials including reports and other tools, and;
  2. undertakes policy and advocacy activities.

Resource materials, reports and other tools include:

  • US state, national, and global reports, companion interactive maps, briefing sheets, and other resource tools;
  • Experts' workshops, reports and briefings on a particular issue, and;
  • CEP Fellowship Power Points and Summary Reports.

Activities include policy makers, media and advocacy briefings and events, activist workshops, and UN and other influentials' briefings in key targeted community to national levels.

Building New Population-Sustainable Development Youth Leadership and Fellowships

Each year CEP undertakes Youth Fellowships with leading partner organizations to:

  • advance the science, science-policy-advocacy links, and real-world science application, and;
  • build a cadre of outstanding new young leaders on the issues

As part of this CEP partners with leading organizations including:

The Fellowship program creates a unique opportunity for US youth to become leaders on the issues, while at the same time advancing the science and integrating it into policy and advocacy, by:

  • Undertaking cutting-edge research, analysis and/or reporting of key population and environmental issues;
  • Determining how the science is linked to and can enhance women-centered approaches to sustainable development and health issues, girls/women's empowerment, education and reproductive health issues, and;
  • Become part of CEP's long-term, ongoing mentoring project to create and facilitate new young leadership and “influentials” on the issues in science, policy, and advocacy.

Women/Girls Empowerment Program

This program draws attention to women and girls' unique roles, needs, and lessons learned from successful programs in the US and globally, in relation to CEP's other program issues. Through forums and webcasts CEP brings the powerful narratives of leading grassroots women activists to the public's, policymaker's and influentials’ view, and advocate on their behalf on the issues.

Reproductive Health (RH) Program

CEP's two project activities under this program involve policy and advocacy work on: a) US community/grassroots, state and federal policies at risk in FY 2011-2012, and; b) international RH/FP policies and on the ground programs, strengthening US leadership and targeted US constituencies in the global context on key policies at risk in FY 2011-2012.

In both cases this is undertaken with tailored background resource materials; targeted constituents, grassroots to national level workshops/public forums, and; targeted policy and media campaigns/briefings.
